Who is Chanakye ?
Chanakye (4th Century BCE) was an Indian Philosopher,Teacher,Economist and Jurist who also known as Kautilya and Vishnugupta.Chanakye was the chief advisor and character who played a very significant role in the foundation,expansion and building of Maurya Empire.
Chanakye was teacher of Chandragupta and served the court of Chandragupta Maurye and Bindusara. There are different stories of how Chandragupta became the king and Chanakye his Chief minister.According to the Buddhist legend, the Nanda kings preceded Chandragupta And Chanakya was a Brahmin from Takshashila.
Chanakya was a scholar and had the knowledge of three Vedas. As per the legend, Chanakya paid Chandragupta’s foster-father a huge amount and took him away from his foster-father. He trained Chandragupta for royal duties for 7 years. Chanakya had hidden his treasure of gold coins at some safe place when Chandragupta became an adult, Chanakya bought an army of his own with the help of his treasure. They both invaded the kingdom of Dhana Nanda but faced a severe defeat. They made some mistakes while invading Dhana Nanda’s kingdom and changed their strategy the second time they assembled the army. They first attacked the border villages of Dhana Nanda’s kingdom and then gradually proceeded towards the kingdom’s capital Pataliputra (Pataliputta in Mahavamsa).
Chanakya appointed Chandragupta as the new king. He ordered some fishermen to find the location of the treasure hidden by Dhana Nanda. When the location of the treasure was found, Chanakya ordered the fishermen to be killed too. He then appointed some people to find and eliminate all the rebels and robbers from the kingdom. He also served Bindusara, Chandragupta’s son as the Chief Minister and helped him rule just like his father.
He is known to be very clever and intelligent. He helped Chandragupta in establishing and expanding his empire. Almost every decision was taken by him and he helped both the rulers, Chandragupta and Bindusara, rule the kingdom effortlessly till the day he was there in the ministry.
